Learn By Doing
At St Mary’s we believe students learn best when they are explicitly taught the knowledge and skills they need, and then given meaningful opportunities to apply, practise and extend their learning. Guided by the Vision for Engagement from Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS), our teachers provide clear and purposeful instruction, model new learning and support students to develop strong foundations. Students are then encouraged to use what they know in authentic and engaging learning experiences that develop independence, curiosity, problem solving and deeper thinking.
Our approach supports students to think critically, collaborate with others and apply their learning to new and challenging situations. From the early years onwards, students are given opportunities to explore ideas, ask questions, make connections and explain their thinking. In Prep – 2, our weekly Discovery sessions provide a dedicated opportunity for students to apply their developing knowledge and skills through purposeful, play-based experiences and extended projects. Through this balance of explicit teaching and active application, we aim to develop capable, confident and curious learners who understand not only what they are learning, but how and why they can use it.
MACS
Governance
St Mary’s is a school which operates with the consent of the Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne and is operated and governed by Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools Ltd (MACS). MACS governs and operates 292 Catholic schools in the Archdiocese to continue the mission of Catholic education to proclaim the Good News and equip our young people with the knowledge, skills and hope to live meaningful lives and enrich the world around them. Because the good work of educating the young is a co-responsible task led by every member of the Catholic school community, School Advisory Councils have been established to provide a crucial point of connection between the wider school community and school leaders. This governance model was designed to ease the administrative burden on our schools and parishes, allow parish priests to focus on the mission of education in the parish, enable greater collaboration between schools and ensure greater consistency in school policies and procedures.
A Word
From Our Principal
On behalf of the St Mary’s school community I would like to welcome you to our school website. I am very honoured and proud to be the Principal of St Mary’s in Lancefield and Romsey. I was appointed as principal in 2024 and prior to this I was Deputy Principal Diversity & Logistics at St Mary’s from 2020. I have many years of experience in various other Catholic Education settings across Melbourne and regional areas in both Primary and Secondary settings.
As a Catholic Community, we are committed to an engaging environment that encourages growth, relationships and the wellbeing of all. As an active learning community, we all aim to be lifelong learners working towards a Common Good.
St Mary’s School’s vision is enacted, promoted and articulated throughout the school & the school community. It is published on the schools website, in the staff and parent handbook and yearly in the annual report to the school community.
Our doors are always open and I invite any community members who may wish to know more about our school to make an appointment to meet with me or take a personalised school tour. This is the best way to showcase our amazing facilities and excellent school climate and culture in person.
